Hydraulic cylinder

Also called: hydraulic ram, hydraulic actuator, linear actuator

A hydraulic cylinder converts the pressure of hydraulic oil into straight-line force and motion. Oil pumped into the cylinder pushes on the piston, which moves the piston rod out or in.

Its main parts are the tube (barrel), the piston with its seals, the piston rod, the gland that guides and seals the rod, the end caps and the oil ports. The force it delivers equals the working pressure multiplied by the piston area.
